Pure 5G explained

With the introduction of Pure 5G to the Afrihost product offerings, we can offer our clients a more expansive network coverage as an affordable alternative to Fibre and DSL.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is 5G?

5G is a fifth-generation wireless cellular/mobile network that is much faster than previous network generations such as 3G and 4G. Like its predecessors, 5G is also wireless, which means easier and quicker setup.

5G’s high speed and low latency connectivity open doors to new possibilities as it can transmit data with little delay, resulting in a better connectivity experience.

How does 5G work?

Pure 5G is Afrihost’s 5G offering that runs on the MTN network, which means you get the coverage where there is MTN 5G coverage. All you need is a 5G SIM and an MTN-approved CAT6 5G router. There is no installation required as 5G is wireless. You may need to set up the APN on the router if your router is not preconfigured for Pure 5G.

How to setup the APN?

You can read the article How to configure the APN on your ZTE 5G device for an easy-to-follow step-by-step guide.

What are the benefits of 5G?

5G is much faster than its predecessors (4G, 3G etc). It has a lower latency and less interference. It requires no installation, so there are no installation or setup costs.

How long does Pure 5G take to activate?

Pure 5G SIMs normally activate within 30 minutes but in extreme cases it can take up to 48 hours to after delivery.

What is the coverage of 5G in South Africa?

Most cities in South Africa already have 5G coverage. It is expanding fast as MTN continues to add infrastructure to improve the 5G footprint throughout the country. You can check the coverage in your area on the Afrihost website before you sign up for Pure 5G.

How many device + SIM packages can I sign up?

You can sign up for a maximum of three devices + SIM packages per account (business/individual).

How many SIM-only packages can I sign up?

There is no limit to SIM-only Pure 5G sign ups.

Is there a delivery fee?

No, there is no delivery fee for SIM + Device and SIM-only orders.

Cancelation policy
  • SIM + Device - should you cancel your SIM + Device package in less than 6 months from the signup date, or your account falls into arrears, you will automatically be charged a cancellation fee of R999.
  • SIM Only - the cancellation fee does NOT apply to SIM Only packages. These packages can be cancelled at any time before the 15th of the month.
Data
Is Pure 5G uncapped?

Yes. Pure 5G is uncapped, which means you never run out of data.

What does 'uncapped' mean?

If you would like to understand The difference between capped and uncapped data please read our article for more information.

What speeds can I expect from 5G?

The average 5G speed on the MTN network is approximately 246Mbps. Average speeds remain device and coverage-dependent and are determined by the external environment around your home and where the router is situated in your home.

Is there any throttling or thresholds on Pure 5G?

Yes. Pure 5G is subject to a monthly threshold of 1TB. Once you reach 1TB, your connection speed will be reduced to 1Mbps until the end of the month.

Is Pure 5G a contract or month-to-month package?

All our packages are month-to-month and can be easily cancelled if you change your mind.

Can I use LTE on my 5G SIM card if there is no 5G network?

Pure 5G is backward compatible with Pure LTE, meaning that should you be unable to connect to a 5G network, Pure 5G can drop to a slower LTE connection and change back to 5G when it becomes available again.

Device
What device can be used with 5G?

Only approved CAT6 devices will work on the MTN 5G Network. This range of devices includes:

  • HUAWEI 5G CPE Pro 2
  • ZTE 5G CPE MC801A

Please note that Pure 5G will only work on the above approved devices. If you insert your SIM card into a device that has not been approved by MTN the SIM card will be blocked and you will lose internet access. You will then need to contact our Support team to get the SIM card unblocked.

Can I use my own 5G router?

Yes, as long as your router is one of the CAT6 MTN approved routers. Any other router will NOT work. MTN will block the SIM if it is inserted into an incorrect router. You will need to set up the APN for Pure 5G on your router.

Can I use any MTN SIM card for Pure 5G?

No, you can only use a SIM that is provided by Afrihost for Pure 5G.

Will there be a setup fee?

No, there is no setup fee.

Can I use my 5G device on the go?

No, MTN locks the SIM to one location, which is the one you provide upon sign up. The SIM will be blocked if you use it in a different location that is not linked the location given on sign up.

What do I do if my SIM card is blocked?

You will need to contact Afrihost support via WhatsApp, email or call centre for further assistance.

What if I relocate and change address?

You will need to contact our support team to request MTN to assign the SIM card to the new location as the service is locked to a single tower in the area.

Can I reactivate my previously cancelled Pure 5G SIM?

No, once the cancellation takes effect, the SIM card cannot be reactivated. You need to sign up for a new 5G SIM package.
