Domains and Hosting

What is the difference between Managed and Unmanaged Hosting?

Managed hosting

Only available with Linux WHM or cPanel servers

Afrihost will manage all the Hardware, Software, Power and Network for Managed Servers. The operating system, control panel, server setup (base OS), server backups are all managed and supported.

The following is included with all Managed servers:

  • Backups.
  • Manage server-side software (cPanel and server operating system)
  • OS and server security.
  • Weekly security audits for vulnerable code and backdoors.
  • 24-hour support.
  • Basic server monitoring. (Ping monitoring (ICMP) and Service port monitoring)
  • Server performance tuning.
  • Managed is prioritised over unmanaged.

With the Managed servers Afrihost will retain root user access. The client will have access via WHM and jailed SSH access.

Self-Managed Hosting

Only Linux and Microsoft Windows OS are supported

With the Self-Managed server, Afrihost will provide the user with full Root or Remote Desktop access to the server.

Afrihost will be responsible for managing the hardware of the server and will install the initial base operating system on the server. The client is responsible for managing the servers operating system software, third-party software, updates, firewall, security, backups etc of this server.

If you have a server administrator that will be managing this server for you or if you have the knowledge/skills of managing your own server then the self-managed option may be a better option to opt for.
