What is the difference between Shared Hosting and Dedicated / Cloud Hosting?

Hosting can be daunting with all the terminology, jargon, options and packages available. It is difficult to know which solution is best suited for you. We are going to simplify it and help you understand to make the best choice.

What is Shared Hosting?

Shared hosting is when multiple websites are hosted on one server.

Think of the server as a pie, and everyone with a website gets a piece of the pie. People choose this option because it is inexpensive as resources are shared with other users. Hundreds of websites can be hosted on a single server and are maintained by the hosting provider.

Shared hosting offers two operating platforms to host on, namely Linux and Windows. To decide whether to go for Linux or Microsoft hosting you will have to identify what your website’s requirements are for both Shared and dedicated hosting.

Linux is generally a more popular option because of its affordability, stability and many features.

What is Dedicated / Cloud Hosting?

Dedicated hosting is when your website is hosted on a single server that is dedicated specifically to your website or application.

Again, think of the server as a pie, but this time you have the whole pie to yourself. This means you are not sharing the resources of the server; you can host as many domains as your server can accommodate and have additional features and access to your multiple domains or applications.

Dedicated hosting has two options

  1. Afrihost managed server
  2. Self-managed server
Afrihost Managed Server

Managed means that your server is managed and maintained by Afrihost.

  • Operating system and server security installed.
  • Weekly security audits for vulnerable code and backdoors.
  • Server monitoring.
  • Server performance tuning.

Self-Managed Server

Self-managed means that your server is managed by you, Afrihost only maintains the hardware and installs a base operating system.
