The difference between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi
Your Wi-Fi Router uses radio frequencies to transmit a signal and communicate with wireless devices that connect to the internet, like your mobile phone, laptop or computer. The difference between the two frequencies, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, is bandwidth transmission ie: speed vs range.
The 2.4GHz frequency will give you a greater range of signal at a reduced speed, whereas the 5GHz connection can transmit at a faster at a shorter range.
Higher bandwidth means that files will download and upload faster, and high-bandwidth applications such as streaming video will perform much smoother and faster. Higher frequencies allow faster transmission of data, also known as bandwidth. Therefore, the 5GHz with its higher bandwidth will provide much faster data connections than 2.4 GHz.
This is how far your data can travel. In most cases, the higher the frequency of a wireless signal, the shorter the range.
The reason for this is that higher frequency signals cannot penetrate solid objects like walls and floors as well as lower frequency signals can. Thus, the 2.4 GHz has a farther range than the 5 GHz frequency.
2.4GHz has a broader wavelength and has the advantage of covering a farther distance. 5GHz has a more compact wavelength which gives it the ability to provide faster data rates over a shorter distance.
The frequency you choose will depend on where and how you use your Wi-Fi connection most.
Most Wi-Fi enabled devices use the 2.4 GHz band, including microwaves, garage door remotes, baby monitors and mobile devices. When multiple devices attempt to use the same frequency, overcrowding occurs, causing your routers’ Wi-Fi signal to become intermittent and slow thus affecting the quality of your internet connection.
5 GHz band tends to have less overcrowding than the 2.4GHz band because fewer devices use it, this is because the 5GHz band has 23 channels for devices to use, and the 2.4GHz band has only 11 channels. Most Modern Routers will broadcast two networks to choose from if your device supports dual-band.
Choose 2.4GHz if distance coverage is what you require most.
The 5 GHz frequency band is much less congested, you will have a more stable connection with improved speeds. The shorter waves used by the 5GHz band makes it less capable to penetrate walls and solid objects. 5GHz has a shorter range than the 2.4 GHz band. Choose 5 GHz if you require high-speed data transfers for streaming, gaming or downloads and if you have multiple devices connected that are experiencing interference or intermittent connectivity issues.
A wired ethernet (LAN) connection is more recommended than a wireless connection. A wired connection offers lower latency, no drop in connection due to interference and is faster than a wireless connection.
