Web Hosting FAQs
In today's digital age, a website is crucial. But with a website comes the need for reliable web hosting. We've got you covered - exploring key considerations and answering essential questions to help you choose the best hosting solution for your needs.
What is web hosting?
Web hosting is a service that enables you to lease space and bandwidth from a hosting company, allowing your website to be available on the internet. This means you can publish your website, making it accessible to anyone around the world.
What is a bandwidth and how much do I need?
Bandwidth is the amount of data that can be transferred between your website and visitors in each period. The required bandwidth depends on the number of visitors and the content they access.
What is disk quota and how much do I need?
A disk quota is the maximum amount of storage space allocated to your website. Your logs (stats) and emails will also take up web space on a web hosting server. It limits the volume of files, data, and content you can store. The amount of disk quota you need depends on various factors like the size of your website, the type of content you have (images, videos, text), and whether you plan to expand in the future.
Types of web hosting
- Shared Hosting: Shared hosting is when multiple websites are hosted on one server making it more economical.
- Cloud hosting: A cloud server is a virtual server that runs in a cloud computing environment rather than a physical server. It is built, hosted, and delivered through the internet via a cloud computing platform and is accessed remotely.
- Reseller hosting: Reseller hosting allows you to sell hosting services to others using resources allocated to you by the hosting provider.
- Dedicated hosting: With dedicated hosting, you get an entire server dedicated to your website. This offers the highest level of control, performance, and customisation.
- Rack hosting: Rack hosting, also known as colocation hosting, involves renting space within a data centre's rack, to house your server hardware. In this arrangement, you provide the physical server equipment, and the data centre provides the space, power, cooling, and internet connectivity required to keep your server running.
How do I upload my website files to the server?
Uploading website files involves transferring the files from your local computer to a web server, making your website accessible on the internet. Please read our Help Centre article How to publish or upload your website files to the internet, for further information.
What is uptime?
Uptime refers to the operational time of a server without interruptions. In web hosting, it signifies the percentage of time a website remains accessible to users online.
What is the difference between Linux and Windows hosting?
Linux and Windows are two different hosting operating systems. Linux hosting uses the Linux operating system (OS) and supports languages like PHP. It's often more budget-friendly and popular for platforms like WordPress. Windows hosting runs on the Windows OS, supports languages like ASP.NET, and is suitable for sites using Microsoft technologies or specific Windows applications.
What is the difference between managed and self-managed hosting?
A managed server is overseen by the hosting provider, handling tasks like maintenance, security, and technical support. In contrast, a self-managed server requires you to handle these aspects yourself, granting more control but necessitating greater technical expertise. Can I host emails only?
Yes, you can host emails only without necessarily hosting a website or other types of content. Email hosting refers to the service of managing and storing emails for a domain. Unlike traditional web hosting, which primarily deals with hosting website content, email hosting is tailored to provide a reliable and secure platform for handling electronic communication.
Can I host my website if my domain is not with Afrihost?
Yes. You can host your website with Afrihost while registering your domain with another company/ hosting provider. The domain host will take care of the domain's setup. Afrihost will store your website's content and make it accessible on the internet.
I pointed my domain to WIX, now my emails are not working. Why is that?
When you point your domain to WIX or another host, it can impact your email services if the MX record is not configured correctly. To resolve this, log into your Afrihost ClientZone, copy the MX record associated with your domain, and proceed to your WIX dashboard. Update the MX records in the WIX dashboard to point to Afrihost's email server to ensure proper email functionality.
